Bound to Shadows (Riley Jensen, Guardian, Book 8) by Keri Arthur

Win a Copy of this Book at the Blog with Bite - CONTEST ENDS TODAY!

I got my first taste of the Riley Jensen series by downloading the first book Full Moon Rising on amazon for free. I love those Kindle Freebies! After reading Full Moon Rising I was undecided whether I should move on.  On reading Book 8, Bound to Shadows - well now I have to go back and start over and read the series!  I actually enjoyed this book more than the first. Maybe it is because Riley has matured - making a go out of monogamy - and finally embraced her career - but I actually liked her a little better than in the beginning.

In Bound to Shadows Riley is on a Who-Done-It mission to find out who is beheading the local vamps.  And while this might be the plot pusher - the real meat and potatos is Riley's love life and the triangle that is forming between her LOVE and her FATE.  I don't want to spoil - but I'm pushing for LOVE, even though FATE is damn smoldery (is that a word?)

Because this is so late in the series, I'm afraid of spoilers, which is why the quickie review.  Also I feel like I would do it an injustice, by giving it an in-depth review while not having read the books in between.  I am now going to do just that though.  So - if you haven't read the series, I do recommend it for vamp lovers and wolfy addicts alike.  There are some problems, which is why I'm rating as a 3.5 - but the book is entertaining.

Bound to Shadows supplied by Tricia at Meryl L. Moss Media Relations, Inc.

Lover Eternal - Black Dagger Brotherhood Book 2

Fans of vampires and larger than life male protagonists - make you way over to the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward. Don't walk - run.  These books are hot!

In the first book, Ward introduced us to the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Vampires, whom were not once humans like popular fiction usually portrays, but an entirely different species and the Brotherhood are the male perfection that guards this species from the ghouls that hunt the vampires.

The Brotherhood is a scarred and damaged group of men, each with his own problems and his own psychological neurosis - which brings us to the introduction of Rhage. Pretty boy, adrenaline junky and compulsive sex addict - Rhage has a curse strapped on his back that keeps him from leading a "normal" life.

In steps Mary Luce. Human. Pure. Will she have the stamina (hee hee) and goodness to rip Rhage away from his demons?

Lover Eternal is a must read for vamp fans.  If you enjoy the Hamilton, Harrison, Harris series, you will enjoy these.  Ward has a gritty tone that sucks you in and keeps you reading until late at night.  Her characters are almost disturbingly flawed, but it makes you like them even more. Her dialogue is fresh and rough - just like her action sequences.

The only thing that drives me crazy about these boys is that sometimes they can just be too overpowering - and the girls a bit too "anything for my man." Nothing too overemcompessing.  The books are still really good.

Under the Dome by Stephen King

Under the Dome falls flat, during the entire 1000+ pages I felt as if I, myself was sipping on stale air.

I haven't read a King novel in a long time.  It has at least been a decade.  King will always remain in my heart as the novelist who popped my paranormal cherry.  It was 6th grade and I read IT to the horror of my deeply religious teacher, who couldn't believe that I was reading the book, and thought I was just showing off by bringing the book to "free time". (Catholic School K-12) The man actually gave me a test on the book to prove that I was lying and as unintelligent as he assumed I was.

Since then I sucked down every King novel that was in our local library, and The Stand still remains as one of my top 10 favorite books in existence. Yet, with maturity comes changes in taste and my tastes moved away from Mr. King's novels and onto others.  With his release of Under the Dome I thought it might be the time to go back and sample Kings writings. Especially since I had a 50% Off coupon from Borders.  (Yes I bought this sucker with my own money)

I think I picked the wrong novel to make my way back into King's macabre world. This novel can't even compare to some of his earlier writing. It had everything that makes King's writing memorable and epic: witty dialog between characters, the intense action sequences, death and destruction, larger than life villains and troubled, soiled and touching good guys/girls.

Yet, there was a lot of undesirables in this novel also.

For one there were way too many characters. There was an index!  I was completely lost during half the book as the POV shifted and it took me almost a page to figure out who this person was.

Secondly, there was too much foreshadowing within the novel.  So much so, that when the climax hit, I was just basically like "Oh ok, well finally." No surprise, just grisly teeth grinding as I read through the graphic depictions of people's deaths.

Next I also thought the characters were a bit off.  Sometimes they just didn't act like themselves.

Lastly, it was just too much.  Too much book for me.  Too many characters, too much description, too many plot lines that were way too hard to follow.  I skimmed a lot through this book.  Half this book could have been cut out and it would have been much better. There was also tons of plot threads that didn't match. Bigger the author - the more the editor gets scared of them, huh?

Oh, and on a personal note - mom always tells me not to discuss politics and religion in polite company.  This book was choked full of political references and religious stereotypes.  It was very obvious which way King's political beliefs fell, and his stereotyping of right-wing crazies was insulting at some times. I've really had enough of actors and singers getting political - there is nothing like going to a concert and hearing a singer blab about this and that political agenda.  I really don't want to read it either. But that is just this reviewers opinion.

Fans of King will probably enjoy this.  For me, well it was just pretty stale - like that old pack of cigarettes that you find in your coat pocket when you pull it out for the winter.  Eureka! Look what I've found - until you smoke it.  You get the nicotine kick - but it just tastes like chicken poop.

City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare

While stuffed full of fanciful prose and colorful backdrops - the second in the Mortal Instruments Series had me skimming way too much.

If you have not read City of Glass do not read on.  Review is full of SPOILERS. Go out buy City of Glass.  Read it and then read this review. :)

City of Glass left us with one H E C K of a cliffhanger.  I was literally left reeling. Yet, even though I was fascinated with the world that Clare had created, I didn't rush out and buy the second one. Which I'm rather glad I did not, because I would have been severely disappointed.

City of Ashes starts right off where the last book ended. Clary is distraught because of the discovery that Jace is her brother, and Simon is PO'd that he can't get Clary to step away from the insestual thoughts she has been having and into his waiting arms.

Clare exposes a few more Downworlders - the fairies, and introduces us to a few more characters.

Valentine is still an undefeatable enemy, who now has very strong allies that almost seem omnipotent.

My problems arose in this novel because of the massive amount of worthless prattle that Clare focused on.  There was just a lot of nonsense in this novel. Simon and Clary's relationship was focused on a lot, even though it was completely unbelievable.  Clary was only "pretending" at a relationship.  There was no emotion there.  The only time she showed real emotion to Simon was when he was on the verge of dying.  When he was alive and well - she just seemed annoyed with him.

Also the "bad guys" are just a little too much.  The vast armies of Valentine were just over the top.  Swarms and swarms - how in the world were they to defeat this?  The Inquisitor's actions were also very unbelievable. The Inquisitor acted like a complete loon.  L-O-O-N spells unrealistic. Both Valentine and the Inquisitor are unwavering in their stubborn beliefs - arguing and pleading did nothing to waver them - so all the logic battles that Clary, Jace, Alec & Isabelle fought with them was just hot air.

Oh and where did Maia go??? Huh? She is like this side character that may or may not turn into a big character - and she just jumps through a hole and disappears? Holes Holes and More Holes.

What had me pulling my hair out - the Whispering without any conclusions.  What did the Inquisitor say to Jace?  What did the Inquisitor see that made her freak out?

I am hoping and praying that the 3rd installment is much better than the 2nd - because I am hooked to the characters and their plights.  Yet, I'm getting scared.  I need to know what Valentine did to Jace and Clary.  Clare has been hinting; The 1st child that was a monster, that isn't Jace? What was that? Hint one that Jace isn't really Valentine's son?  The scar on his shoulder that means something important.  What is that? God, I need to know.  Killing me. This third book better be good or I'm going to have a stroke.

Thus ends my rantings over this book.

Question:  Which cover ya like better? US or UK?

      New Moon Soundtrack! Love it!

Ok I am loving everything from the movie! I got a coupon from the website I bought the advanced tickets on - and so I downloaded the soundtrack.  Absolutely in love with the music.  Doesn't help that 3 of my favorite artists are featured.  If you are having any doubts - don't this music is great!

The one problem? Every time I listen to the soundtrack I desperately want to see the movie again! But I'm really not one of those strange Twilight people...lol srsly! (I saw that earlier)

Removed the iPod because I am not a fan of music on blogs. I usually have to hurry up and turn down my volume.

I just Pitched my YA Novel

Young Adult Novel Discovery Contest - I entered!

Just wanted to tell everyone that I took the plunge and entered the YA novel that I have been writing (on and off) since Katrina.
The contest is to give the title and the first 250 words of the book - and I guess hold your breath.

      Here is my entry:

Sassafras Sojourn and the Land of Spice

On an ordinary street, in a backwater town, sat a not so ordinary girl. Her name was Sassafras, Sassafras Sojourn. The un-ordinariness didn’t stop at just her name. Sassafras had a long list of not quite so ordinary characteristics that is a little too long to list in the beginning of her story. But this is normal, if someone was quite ordinary, and lived a quite ordinary life, than you wouldn’t be likely to read their story. So, this tale starts with a girl, who sits in front of her new home with tears in her eyes.

Sassafras isn’t that happy of a girl. On top of not being ordinary, she is stuck in the midst of a very large, yet, rather quite normal family. There is a mom, who likes to read romance novels, and make little funny shaped cookies, she even tucks her kids in at night, with kisses and sweet words. She is even Sassafras’ real mom, she is the only person that belongs to Sassafras, the problem is she also belongs to quite a lot of other people. Her name is Jane.

There is a dad. His name is Jim. He doesn’t belong to Sassafras. He came into Sassafras’ life a very long time ago, and if circumstances were better, she might have belonged to him, but circumstances were a little off, so she tried not to get in the way.

Then there were the other circumstances. There were six of them. First were the twins...

      Parajunkee's New Moon Review

      Better late than never...

Jealousies raged on Twitter on Thursday as quotes from other vampire series authors came through bashing Team Edward tweets and sneering (if you could sneer via a font) at Team Jacob twits.  This had me laughing as I read the reports of the teaming masses that went out and watched this movie over and over again this weekend.   $26.27 million The Hollywood Reporter claims New Moon racked in the FIRST NIGHT.  Over 140 million this first weekend.  Pretty impressive for sparkly "sissy" vamps - as I saw they were called.

Even at my work the IT boys have pics of Keifer with handwritten notes underneath them that say, Vamps Don't Sparkle.  But whom did I see in the theater as I looked over - hiding in the masses of middle aged cougars and hyper tweens? One of those IT guys - not with a girlfriend or wife either - he brought a boy bud.  LMAO. So...what is it? There is just something about those damn sparkly vamps.

Alright enough of my rants - on to my thoughts.  First opinion.  Kristen Stewart got herself some acting lessons.  Bravo. No more erratic Tourette's like blinking and stuttering to show high emotion.  I really was digging on her.  The Edward/Bella interaction was a little strained, but I think it was a Rob Patz issue and not a Kristen thing.  Rob's struggle throughout the movie was a bit more intense in this one - and I really don't think he did as good of a job in New Moon as he did in Twilight.  Probably stemming from the fact that he wasn't in this movie as much - and there really wasn't a way for him to build up the character.

Second opinion.  Wolf boys.  Now while I am not complaining about hotties #1, 2, 3, 4, 5... I was very pleased with the eye candy, but their acting skills were a bit lacking.  The Emily house scene seemed amaturish.

Third.  I really enjoyed watching the Bella/Jacob relationship play out.  It was well done, and while Taylor had some moments (his voice needs to grow in to his body) for such a young actor he did rather well.  He definitely had the audience thrumming.

Fourth.  The vamps.  OMG. The casting of the vamps was superb.  It was the most intense part of the film.  Dakota was great, I didn't see the little girl from The Cat in the Hat - I saw JANE. Scary!

I can't wait for Eclipse to see more of these vamps.  The vamp battles were the best part, so I can only imagine what Eclipse will be.  The wolf/Victoria interactions were done so well, the cinematography had me dizzy at points but I still enjoyed it.  Bryce Dallas Howard will be Victoria in Eclipse - which should be a big deal because it is mostly action sequences and not a lot of lines.

Don't wait...run to the theater.  You gotta see this one.

Queene of Light by Jennifer Armintrout - Blog with Bite Review

      H B I C R E V I E W  - by Parajunkee

Regarding the book Queene of Light, I’m not going to bore you with intricate details on this book. Too many times I find myself rambling with long explanations – that boils down to one thing. Yeah I liked the book. Well, for Queene of Light, yes I did like it. But, I also had some major problems with it. First off, let me tell you why I liked it. For one, the concept was interesting and original. Secondly, it was well written and the plotlines were tight. Thirdly, the tone of the book was consistent.

Now, for the reason my stomach was a bit queasy while reading this book. The author employed a very over-used romantic ploy that I am going to call the Edward Cullen Technique in honor of the New Moon release. The I Love You So Much I Need to Break Your Heart Send You Away And Pretend I Don’t Like You Technique. In this book the author turns it around – the chick does this to the male, instead of vice versa, but it’s the same as a lot of other books out there.

Why would this technique be employed over and over in romantic settings? I understand it builds dramatic tones, and the hopes that the couple will be reunited. Yet, in Queene of Light it was used to basically eradicate the male supporting character. With one fell swoop he is gone and the story progresses without even a backwards thought of him. In New Moon I think this technique really worked, in fact it held together the entire book. But, the filler of the “push away” was loaded with another romance blooming between Bella and Jacob. Within the pages of Queene of Light there is no secondary romantic filler – there is only the original conflict that was established before the “push away” occurred. So, for this book I don’t think the technique worked, which was why it didn’t sit well with me.

Besides that, I enjoyed reading about this interesting world. I recommend it to fantasy fans that like a little modern grit in their genre. Yet, because of the “push away” problem, I really don’t want to give it a high rating. Queene of light gets a 2/4 BWB rating.

      Dark Stranger by Susan Sizemore

      Dark Stranger by Suzanne Sizemore

First off I would like to apologize.  Like an idiot I made a huge faux pas... and spelled the authors name wrong.  No excuses but I'm also reading Suzanne Collins...urgh.  Sorry!!!!!

Book provided by Pocket Books for review.

From bestselling author Suzanne Sizemore a new twist in her Prime books comes with the Vampire Book Club. Sizemore has created a world of science fiction and fantasy that revolves around vampires, werewolves and other paranormal creatures that are oh-so-fun to read about.

Zoe Pappas, human and heir to the Byzant throne (human ruling conglomerate in the far-future world) finds her self being taken hostage by aliens that the human world is at war with.
General Matthias “Doc” Raven, marine general, vampire, smokin’ hot hunk, has been in the POW camp for a long time. When Zoe enters the camp she turns his world and the rest of the prisoners lives upside down. The evil aliens are searching for her – not knowing who she is, but that they have captured someone of high rank. What will the aliens do next to the prisoners? Is escape possible? Is love between Zoe and Doc possible when a princess is forbidden to love a vampire???

First Prime book, first Sizemore book. I was pretty impressed. Sizemore implements good tone and she tells a story very well. Her vast Prime world was very in-depth and tended to confuse me at some points, since I’ve never read these books before, yet, if I just ignored some of the finer details I was very entertained. I will probably have to go back and start reading the first in the prime series, because the history sounded interested. The characters were well developed. I really liked Zoe, and Doc was a turn-on if ever there was.

Some downers. You read enough romance and you kinda get tired of the testosterone prone boys that swoop in and take control of “their woman”. Sometimes this just can be annoying. Doc had a tendency for howls, growls and grumpy “My Woman” thoughts, yet Zoe was a tough chick and she put him in his place a few times.

SPOILER: But this is a romance so you gotta know they end up together in the end…duh. When love was declared all controversy just went out the window. The jealous ex just turned into a happy apologetic kitty…the rebel and anti-empire protestor just turned into a blabbering ass kisser etc. I know love makes the world better, but it was a little unbelievable.

These were small points though. I enjoyed the book and my 2 year old really liked the cover. She would pick up the book and go “Oooooh Mama…Dark Stranger.”

This is paranormal romance in all its glory. PNR fans you won’t be disappointed.
