Character Interview and Giveaway - 12.21.12 Characters & Killian McRae

Killian McRae:   Thanks to Parajunkee for giving Sheppard Smyth, Dmitri Kronastia and Alex Cezanne from 12.21.12 the opportunity to step out of Victoria Kent’s shadow and sit down with us a bit.  I’ll direct my first question at Shep, the savoir of humanity.

Sheppard Smyth: That’s overplaying it a bit, don’t you think? Savoir? I don’t know. Maybe more like a Good Samaritan.

Dmitri Kronastia: I actually knew the Good Samaritan, and Shep, you are no Good Samaritan.

KM: Very well, Dmitri, how would you characterize Shep’s role in 12.21.12?

DK: I would call it “hapless hero.” He sort of saves the world by accident. Like when you trip on something walking down the street, but the momentary delay keeps you from being hit by a car that jumps the curb right after.

Alex Cezanne: And this has happened to you… how much?

DK: Almost being hit by a car? You’ve met Victoria, yes?

SS: That’s something I still don’t get, Dmitri. If Victoria loved you so much, why was she trying so hard to hurt you for so long?

DK: One thing I learned early on, Shep, never use logic to explain Victoria’s action. Or any woman, for that matter.

AC: Amen to that.

KM: Well, I really wanted to stay off of the subject of Victoria- she’s already a ham as it is- but since y’all brought her up. .. Alex, Victoria seemed to take a special interest in your upbringing and education. Why do you think that is?

AC: Guilt.

KM: Interesting. Explain?

AC: Victoria has this habit of letting those left in her care down. I mean, just look what happened to Caesarian, right? She swore to protect him, and not a week after Cleopatra was offed, she handed him over to Octavian. I think, with me, she knew 12.21.12 was coming and saw me as her last opportunity to get it right.

KM: And do you think she did?

AC: Get it right? I guess mostly. Like any mother figure, you always think to yourself, “Well, she did her best.”

KM: Sounds fair. Okay, a question for all three of you, and it’s a two-parter: At any point during the events leading up to 12.21.12, did you think the world was really going to end, and if so, what was your last wish?

SS: Last wish?

KM: Yeah, like “If nothing else, at least let XYZ…” Alex?

AC: I had total faith in Victoria. I admit, and no offense Dmitri, but I would have thought, “If nothing else, at least Dmitri Kronastia gets his.”

DK: And I shouldn’t be offended by that?

SS: Well, he did think you killed his sister.

DK: I did kill his sister, but there were extenuating circumstances. Besides, that’s all been cleaned up, hasn’t it?

SS: It was a hypothetical question, Dmitri.

DK: Yeah, with a real hurtful answer.

KM: I would have thought you’d have a thicker skin after so many years, Dmitri, but what about you?

DK: I wasn’t thinking about me, I was just trying to do whatever it took to keep Victoria alive. Guess it turned out that the joke was on me, hey?

KM: I should say so. Shep, your turn.

SS: I don’t know if I ever actually thought the world would end, but I think I kinda wanted it to. I wanted it to, so I could be finally see my wife again. “I’ll be dead, but at least I’ll be with Christine.”

KM: Looks like everything turned out just the way you hoped, then. Huh, Shep?

SS: Yeah, I guess it did. Not like I expected it, but better.

KM:  Thanks for sharing that, Shep.  And thank you as well, Dmitri and Alex.  Before we go, Alex- any insight into the nature of the diplomatic mission you were sent on after 12.21.12?

AC: My trip to Altunatus? Well, let’s just says this: if you thought Victoria Kent was something, just wait until you meet her cousin.

KM: *perks up* Her cousin?

AC: Yup, Horus. Let’s just say he isn’t exactly happy about what’s about to go down in Isis’ court, and he isn’t about to stand idle and be usurped.

KM: Well, that’s … intriguing. I guess we’ll read about that in the sequel.

AC: *leans in and winks* You tell us, chief.

 About Killian McRae:

Born and raised in rural Michigan, Killian used the local library- a single room in a her village's firehouse- as an escape to visit distant worlds, meet brave heroes, learn of classic mythologies, and develop a lifelong love of learning and reading.

Though she had written three novels before graduating high school, she never thought of trying to publish until much later in life. 12.21.12 is her first published work.

Her other interests include musicology and history. She currently lives in the San Francisco Bay area.

Archaeologist Sheppard Smyth has staked his career and the honorable memory of his deceased wife and partner on proving his widely-panned theory: Cleopatra VII, last ruler of Ancient Egypt, was murdered. When a statue of the doomed Queen is discovered in an Olmec excavation site in Mexico, Shep rushes to investigate and, hopefully, find the proof that has evaded him for so long. Soon, he finds himself in the middle of the rivalry between the sexy, enigmatic international thief, Victoria Kent, and infamous rumored Russian mobster, Dmitri Kronastia. Both hold pieces to the puzzle that will finally shed light on Cleopatras death, as they vie for Shep's trust and assistance. As he is drawn further into their world of ancient gods, supernatural powers, and alternative history, little does Shep know that the fate of all humanity may hinge on his ability to discover the truth in between Victoria and Dmitris' fragmented claims and hidden identities. Working to decode the ancient past while attempting to save the future, Shep becomes a common pawn played by forces working to see out a quest older than the pyramids themselves and cloaked by the Mayan prophecy of 12.21.12.

THIS IS NOT PART OF PARANORMAL SPRING BREAK - this is what we call Lagniappe.  (pronounced Lan - niap) something extra.
