Book Bloggin 101 - Social Networking? Huh?

Spawned from the Big Sis, Little Blog program, Book Blogging 101 was born. Do you have a question? Leave it in the comments section or email me parajunkee at gmail dot com

The main basis for blogging is interaction with your peers. To start your initial blog, the first step in getting followers is a follow you/follow me trade off. You have to network with other bloggers out there, introduce yourself and solicit for a follow.  It is a very social sport.

To get you started here are a few social sites that you should get onto with your blogger name, or real name (your preference).

  • Get a fan page on Facebook
  • Get on the Facebook application Networked Blogs (search Networked Blogs on Facebooks)
  • Get on Twitter
  • Join bookblogs.ning.com
  • Join Goodreads, Shelfari, Library Thing, etc. take your pic (my preference is Goodreads)
Making Friends

The art of commenting.

Go forth and search the web. Find blogs that are similar to yours, with topics that you enjoy.  Follow them, leave a comment saying "Hi there!" Let them know that you like there blog and then make a discrete comment like, I'm your latest follower, would you mind following me back...here is my link:

http://www.yourlink.com

XOXO - your name

Don't just follow and get, because sometimes when you start getting more and more followers you can't track the "new" followers. I know personally I can't, so I like to prompt people to say Hi in my comments and leave their URLs.  Don't expect people to click on your blogger profile and try to find your blog url. Leave that URL in the comments section, for easy user friendly access. You want to make a follow as easy as pie for people.

And for some shameless social networking... you can see everything I'm socially networked to in my navigation bar and the wibiya bar at the bottom.  I would love some more facebook fans! XOXO

    Chime In (Thanks Tina!)

Similar to Goodreads, joining Library Thing has helped with publishing/author connections. They also host The Early Reviewer, which gives selected members ARC's that you can review. These are not guaranteed arcs so don’t get crazy...if you’re in the blogging business for free books- you'll be disappointed!

    Q. How do you get a fan page on facebook? Also, how do you get that google friend thing where all you have to do is click follow?

    A. There is a step by step guide on facebook, you just need a facebook account:

I'd been thinking about doing it anyway, so I set up on facebook, except now I can't find it. Is it because 9 people haven't confirmed me yet? I need to hire a full-time IT person.

@Patti are you talking about Networked Blogs or Fan page?

For Networked blogs you need I think 20 or 25 people to network with you. Fan pages are the same. I don't know why they are so stingy.

    Uh, oh - I don't know....I think I did networked blogs...whoops.

Thanks so much for the tips. Since my crossover horror/Christian vampire novel, "Dance on Fire", came out this past February, I have been learning a lot of this stuff on my own. It was nice of you to take the time to tutor me. ;)
    Thanks.

I can not tell you how much I agree! It's important to find blogs that you like and have tastes and such in common with! I definitely don't have a ton of followers, so I may not be a total expert. However, I do follow certain blogs and feel as if I have gotten close to certain bloggers *cough*parajunkee*cough* It's a bond that builds over time through interests, reviews, and comments. It really makes the blogging experience a rich one! :)

I'm glad everyone likes these posts, I'm going to hitting my head against a wall when I run out of topics. (Like next week) LOL. I know what you mean Lily - met a few friends along the way during this bloggy ride, right? The commenting thing I myself have to work on, I read but I feel if I don't have anything like deeply meaningful to say, I don't comment. I feel like a spaz saying, great review, but I still don't really want to read that book...;)
