Meet Author Nancy Gideon

Parajunkee's View is very honored to welcome Nancy Gideon, author of Masked by Moonlight.

A little bit about Ms. Gideon:
With over 50 sales to her credit since her first publication in 1987, Portage, Michigan author Nancy Gideon’s writing career is as versatile as the romance market, itself.  Her books encompass genres from historicals and regencies to contemporary suspense and the paranormal. Her works have been published overseas in Romanian, Italian, Russian, Portuguese, Danish, German, Icelandic and Chinese, among other languages.

PJV: First off, Ms. Gideon, I would like to thank you for taking the time to answer some questions for the readers of Parajunkee’s View. Your latest book, MASKED BY MOONLIGHT is our feature for today. Can you tell us a little bit about the book in your own words?

KH:    I call it “Romeo & Juliet meets Beauty and the Beast in the Big Easy.” He’s a deadly shape-shifter with no knowledge of his past being manipulated by the crime boss who rescued him in as a child.  She’s a no-nonsense detective determined to see justice done even if it means using the mysterious Max Savoie to get closer to her target . . . until he risks his life to save hers.  Throw in a steamy New Orleans backdrop, a criminal empire filled with treacherous alliances, and a clan of shadowy shape-shifters searching for their prophesied leader, and you’ve got a spicy gumbo of intrigue, action, preternatural chills, unexpected humor, and sizzling romance between two fiercely guarded loners who are drawn together by secrets and held by a passion both irresistible and frightening. Laissez les bon temps rouler!

PJV: First impressions are big when meeting someone for the first time. Do you think it is equally important with book covers?  How much creative input did you have in regards to MASKED BY MOONLIGHT?  Did you at least get to meet the cover model?

KH:    The things that sell a book are usually things the author has no control over: the cover, the title, the back blurb, the inside teaser.  These are what introduce the reader to a new author, and if that first impression doesn’t catch their imagination or properly reflect the book’s content, it’s really hard, if not impossible, to coax them back.  I was extremely lucky with Pocket Books.  I’ve written for a number of different publishers and this is the first time, aside from working with small press ImaJinn Books for my vampire novels, that I was part of the ‘team.’  I’ve been actively consulted every step of the way, from the cover concept for the series (which turned out waaay better than I ever could have hoped!), to writing the back and inside cover copy, to picking linking titles, and now putting together a marketing campaign.  I work directly with a fabulous group consisting of editor, assistant editor, publicist and marketing director who are all avid cheerleaders for the series. It’s a great feeling.  Meet the cover model?  I wish! (Even though he’s probably young enough to be my son!) Now THAT would be a selection process I’d enjoy being a part of!

PJV: Your main character is a shape-shifter.  What made you decide to write about this particular paranormal creature?

KH:   I’d done an eight book vampire romance series already so when I was approached to write a paranormal, I was looking for something different.  While vampires are coolly elegant predators, there is something very basic, earthy and…well, animalistic about my Shifters that appealed to me. I enjoyed building a mythic world around them with a caste system and rules to govern their behavior.  And while the hero is definitely one hot, sexy guy, one can’t afford to forget that he’s not quite…human.

PJV: The scene of MASKED BY MOONLIGHT is set in New Orleans.  This just happens to be my home town, what made you decide to write about New Orleans?

KH:    New Orleans is my favorite travel destination.  I’d visited three times pre-Katrina for conferences, which limited the amount of time I could explore, so when I was waiting to hear on the second trilogy of books in the series, I promised myself if they went to contract, I take another trip…a research junket this time.  I spent a week in April in a historic condo in the Quarter with two other writer friends and it was marvelous.  There’s just something so richly unique and sometimes spooky about the atmosphere, with its legends, blending of cultures, the cemeteries and the bayou, and the wonderful old buildings.  It’s easy to let your imagination transport you to another place and time. I can’t wait to go back again.

PJV: Is MASKED BY MOONLIGHT the start of a series?  Any other books currently in the works?

KH:   MASKED BY MOONLIGHT is the first in a six (so far!)book series that follows Max and Charlotte and his Shifter clan.  You won’t have to wait long for more.  CHASED BY MOONLIGHT will be on the stands June 29, 2010 and CAPTURED BY MOONLIGHT on July 27, 2010.  The series is unique in that it follows the developing romance and adventures of Max and Charlotte in a four book story arc. The subsequent books will feature different heroes and heroines, although they will continue to play important secondary roles. It’s been great fun sinking my teeth into these two characters over the course of four books, delving into their dark backstories and weaving in a complex set of personal and professional issues to challenge and strengthen their love for one another. You don’t get to do that within a single novel.

PJV: Are you also a fan of Paranormal Romances?  Any favorites?

KH:   I LOVE paranormal romances!  But then I love to read just about anything…when I have the time.  My current favorite is Kresley Cole’s Immortals series.  Bowen and his werewolf breathren…grrrrowl!

PJV: And, lastly, are there any tour stops or appearances you would like readers to know about?

KH:   At the moment, the only thing on my calendar is the Romance Writers of America® conference in Orlando at the end of July.  I kind of blew my vacation time on the trip to New Orleans (but it was well worth it!). A good way to keep up with what I’m doing and where I’ll be (physically and virtually) is by checking my website (www.nancygideon.com) under the NEWS section.  I’ll have appearances and blog outings listed on my calendar.  I also have a newsletter you can sign up for on my website that will keep readers/booksellers posted on future titles and events. I look forward to seeing you!

Thank you again, Ms. Gideon for stopping by! I, and I'm sure a lot of my readers look forward to reading Masked by Moonlight.

CONTEST ALERT: PJV will be giving away a copy of Masked by Moonlight in a very big and exciting giveaway, later today. Stop by for the details!

Hi Nancy,

Really looking forward to starting this series. Love that you have the next two books coming out so close together. That's my favorite way to read a series.

It looks like I have another book (or series) to add to my growing TBR pile! Great questions. I loved her response to how she would describe her book. Looks like it's a little bit of everything rolled into one- Those are always fun!

This sounds great. I love series where the main couple continues through several books. I think one book is just too short to really explore the characters. In addition, it's great that several more books will be coming out soon after this one and major bonus that the hero is a shifter! I'll definitely be adding this to my wishlist.

Beauty and the Beast? I like anything with that kinda element. I realized it is probably my fave fairy tale. I really glomp onto anything with a glimmer of the tale in it.
