Audio book review from audible.com

PJVs QUICKIE POV:
Powering my way through first in series, audible had the graciousness to offer me up a book that has been on my TBR for years. For some reason something was keeping me away from these novels. Probably the hoaky titles. Seriously, they sounded more like chick lit than Urban Fantasy. Once again, I shouldn't judge a book by the cover/title because these books were anything but chick lit. Intense, original, emotional and exciting, Kitty was a phenomenal UF heroine that had me slapping my head that I hadn't read this sooner.

REVIEW:
Kitty, a struggling radio DJ has had to take the late night shift since her sudden induction into the werewolf community a few years back. Now, at the worst possible hour to be be on the radio, she decides to spice things up with stories of Bat Boy. Topics of the paranormal lead into other intense conversation and quickly the topics turn into vampires and fellow werewolves calling in for advice. She is still reeling when she gets off the air -- and is pretty sure she'll be fired when her boss finds out she didn't play any music at all.

When fan mail and phone calls start pouring in, her boss decides that this will be Kitty's normal repertoire and The Midnight Hour is born. Because of her instant career jump and now talk of syndication and more money, Kitty's status begins to go up. She is now more assure of herself, more confident. This is a big change from the self-conscious and very submissive Kitty of the past. Her alpha was used to pushing her around and now she is standing on her own two feet. Defiant and strong. Her new outlook might be dangerous though, because strong in pack terms means competition and the top dogs don't like competition.

I really enjoyed this novel. The radio voice interplay just made it for me. I like how Kitty went from a more demure and cowed figured to a strong and confident player. She wasn't your usual UF heroine that starts out with these larger than life powers that are so much better than everyone else. Kitty was just your normal werewolf, rather small by other standards. She wasn't a super wolf and her triumph was by accomplishment and deed more than paranormal ability. I really liked that part of the novel.

I enjoyed how her wolf was narrated, in a different voice than Kitty's almost as if they were two beings. You read about this all the time, but this made it sink in. I can't wait to read more about Kitty. I also liked how Vaughn went deep into the wolf dynamic and pack politics. These wolves seemed like they could be, they were nondescript and acted in ways real people would react. The Alpha is not always the perfect male character...

Fun phrasings:

"Aroused like he had just been let out of a monastery and into cheer-leading practice." - Phrase describing Carl.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
Adults only, this book contains strong scenes with violence, hints at rape and sexual encounters. Recommended for fans of Vincent's Shifter Series.

I've always thought this sounded like a good UF read but just haven't had the time to pick it up. This sounds like it would be a nice break from all the similar PNR I tend to read. Great review.
