The Art of Paranormal Romance.

Paranormal romance is a sub-genre of the romance novel. A type of speculative fiction, paranormal romance focuses on romance and includes elements beyond the range of scientific explanation, blending together themes from the genres of traditional fantasy, science fiction, or horror.

So says Wikipedia.

I’ve had a love affair with paranormal elements in novels for years, back before they were even known as paranormal. I think the first book that really hooked me was Interview With a Vampire. I was dating a guy in high school who was really artsy. He looked like Jim Morrison and at the time I was really digging the Doors so that was more than enough for me. He was also into books. He gave me Interview and I didn’t read it at first. I was into romance, historicals mostly, as that’s what my mother read but when I began reading about Louis and Lestat my world changed. I was hooked and quickly read every title that Anne Rice had written.

But there wasn’t much around at that time. I remember Rice came out with a book called The Mummy and it had more romance in it, featuring Cleopatra brought back from the dead and it was open ended…there should have been a sequel but wasn’t.

I continued to read romance but also read a lot of thrillers and suspense. I got married. Had kids and for a while there I didn’t read much. Eventually the kids were in school full time and I found that I had more time to myself. I went to the library and found a treasure. Dark Prince by Christine Feehan. I read it in one sitting and was hooked like a junkie jonesing for a fix.

That book changed my life. Literally. Not only did I fall completely in love with a new genre, I began to get a few ideas of my own. They were ideas that I decided to act upon and in the spring of 2008 I wrote His Darkest Hunger. I landed an agent and we sold it a few months later. Since then I’ve found an entire slew of paranormal authors who inspire me: Sherrilyn Kenyon, Karen Marie Moning, Nalini Singh to name a few.

So, I’m curious…what author changed and or rocked your world?

Time and Fuzzy Logic

My logic is fuzzier than a peach. Fuzzy logic has defining parameters that set degrees of truth, so “false”, “maybe” and “OK”, which is generally how I roll. This means that truth is defined in shades of gray, and ain’t nothing more unappetizing than a gray, fuzzy peach. Fuzzy logic is limited, and doesn’t apply to a lot of things, but I liked the way it sounded; besides, if a book can be named “Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance” which is not really about either, then I suppose I can do the same with this article.

It is said that James Thurber, renowned American humorist and all-around dead guy, feared running into himself while walking down the street. It’s not that he was especially clumsy; it’s that he literally was reported to think that, while walking down the sidewalk, a man would pass him and it would BE him, going in the other direction.

He’d sneak off to a corner phone booth and call his house, asking to see if he was there. Usually he wasn’t. I only mention Thurber because he exemplified the dark side of one on Einstein’s quotes: “Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life's coming attractions.” I don’t know about you, but my imagination can lead me to some pretty dark places, as you can see if you read my book, “Mishap and Mayhem.” Life is not all peaches and cream, and there we are, back to peaches. I must remember to buy some later.

Now for the fuzzy logic part: As you probably are aware, fuzzy logic is that stuff used by computers to process a number of variables, including time series analysis, into useful constructs. This is oversimplifying, but if I don’t oversimplify my neighbors throw rocks at me. Time being a construct that exists outside of dimensional space, there’s theories aplenty about what can and can’t be done with it. There’s the Einstein paradox – you know, the old chestnut about how you go back in time and kill your grandmama, so how do you exist? Einstein stated ‘time travel is impossible.’ He said a lot of things, including “The universe is NOT expanding. It’s constant (static).” Then In 1929 Edwin Hubble showed that the universe WAS, in fact, expanding, Einstein backpedaled like a Cirque du Soleil performer, and said it was “the greatest blunder of my life,” when he admitted that he re-wrote his equations to make it look like the universe was unchanging instead of expanding. This proves one thing: Einstein was a BIG FAT LIAR! You don’t re-write facts to make them fit your preconceived notions, facts is facts, even if you don’t like them! So if he lied about this, how are we supposed to give any credence to his “time travel is impossible” malarkey? I can see the conversation going something like this:

Einstein, upon discovering that time travel is possible, and realizing the colossal muckety mess people could make of reality upon realization of this fact: “Attention, people! Time travel is IMPOSSIBLE!!!”

Random Guy: kicking his instep and looking at the ground : “Aw, shucks, I don’t know about that.”

Einstein: panicking: “And even if it WERE possible, you’d go back in time and kill your grandma, and then you’d be NOTHING!!! And this would set up the basis for a whole bunch of bad Terminator movies!!!! And who wants THAT???”

Random Guy: looking confused: ????

Einstein: burning his notes as fast as he can: “So Time Travel is Impossible!!! Just get it out of your head RIGHT NOW!!!!!”

Random Guy: “What’s in those papers you’re burning?

“Einstein: “Papers? What papers? These are …. Really, really thin tinder sticks! Yeah, that’s the ticket! And why do you ask that? It’s none of your business, nosey!

Random Guy: Your pants are on fire.

So as you can see by my wholly made up scenario, even Einstein wasn’t sure about time travel. The big fat liar.

To conclude: Fuzzy logic develops in computers, which become sentiment, and then they mess with the time-space continuum. This leads, in turn, to the Terminator movies, and a lot of plot holes that you can drive a truck through. Simple. See? No? Well, I’m not going to explain it again.

If I have offended anyone with my ersatz science, hurry up and get over yourself. I am naught but a humble writer. You don’t know how long I’ve waited to use “naught” in a sentence. In actuality I can’t tell a fuzzy gray peach from a particle physicist. In my defense, there’s sometimes quite the resemblance (see Leonard Susskind.) I’ve got to run, I just saw myself coming down the street, and I think I’ll join me for lunch.

Thanks to parajunkee for letting me share with you all today. You can find me over at my blog mmshelley.blogspot.com and on twitter @MM_Shelley

Much love,

M.M. Shelley

Diana Pharaoh Francis Guest Blog

Everyone please give a warm welcome to author Diana Pharaoh Francis!

Hi Everyone! And thanks for having me today.

My latest book is called Bitter Night, and it’s about witches and both the warriors they create—called Shadowblades and Sunspears—and an array of other magical creatures, like angels, red caps, witches and a calleach bheur (blue hag).

In writing this book and the rest of the series, I wanted to be able to tap into the vast array of folklore and mythology that exists in the world, so while the red caps and the blue hag are Scottish in origin, the angels come from a larger world mythology.

Before I tell you about my paranormal creatures, you should know that different sources disagree about what they are and why. I arrived at a general understanding of them and tried to stick with the best descriptions that I could find. I also want to mention that the book had a kelpie in it, but he had to go for various reasons. I liked him very much, however, and intend to bring him back.

Red caps are violent little creatures from Scottish folklore. They inhabit castles mostly and they are vicious, bloody little man-like creatures. They kill visitors and travelers on the road and they drink their blood. Their hats are red because they dip them into the blood of their victims. If the hats dry out, the red caps will die. Some descriptions give them orange, pointed conical teeth with sharp claws and little hobnailed boots.

The Calleach Bheur—the blue hag—has a blue face and long white hair. Some versions of her story have her with one eye. She’s a winter witch, and frequently guards a particular well on top of a mountain in Scotland and is in charge of some rivers and streams. She wears rags and carries a staff topped by the head of a crow and sheathed in ice. She’s the mother of winter and commands the winter storms. At Beltane, she flings her staff under a holly bush and turns to stone. At Samhain, she returns to her female form. She carries a pouch of hailstones around her waist that can grant wishes to those she gives them to.

For those two creatures, I had to invest them with personalities and motivations and involve them in the larger plot of the book. But the angels were a little trickier. The Christian Bible only mentions two by name. The pantheon of angels is older and is drawn from a broad variety of sources, as are their histories and backgrounds. All the same, I didn’t have that much to work with. I didn’t have descriptions at all. Mostly names and their part in angelic history. Xaphan was a fallen angel who proposed burning heaven in the war. He was very smart. Tutresiel was an angel of the sword. Angels of the sword are warriors, dispensing justice with violence and brutality.

I had to give both of them descriptions and personalities to go with them. This is the first meeting of Xaphan:

The angel was nearly seven feet tall. He wore ragged blue jeans and his feet were bare as was his chest. Sprouting from his back was a pair of wings, the feathers black and irridescent. Glimmers of blue and orange flickered along the bottom edges of his primary feathers. Where his wingtips brushed the floor, charred scores appeared, matching those on his pantlegs where he had not been careful enough. The smell of Divine magic rolled off him, mixed with the stench of burning feathers. His eyes were red and his white hair was cropped short, his face and body chiselled like one of Michelangelo’s statues. He appeared to be about sixteen, though he was undoubtedly many thousands of years old.

This is the first sighting of Tutresiel:

A sound like clashing swords drew Alexander’s attention. It was the angel of the sword--Tutresiel. His wings were silver, each feather metallic and sharp. Every beat clattered. Like Xaphan, he was albino white with crimson eyes, but unlike the other angel, his hair was matte black and hung to his shoulders. The blade of the sword he wielded was at least seven feet long and it shone with a incandescent white witchlight.

In this book, there is Uncanny and Divine magic. Uncanny creatures are those that are magic, but can’t create it separately from themselves—like the red caps. Divine creatures are magic creatures who can—like witches.

I really liked writing these characters, developing them and fleshing them out. I liked thinking of them as having likes and dislikes, attitudes and feelings. There’s a little bit more I did to the mythology of them, but you’ll have to read to find out. I don’t want to give it away.

Finally, I want to mention the witches. I wanted truly scary witches, but they also needed to be round characters. I didn’t want them to be easy to hate or to like; I wanted them to be driven by conflicting issues, emotions and concerns. I wanted them to be dangerous and powerful. To some extent they grow out of the folklore of witches that we have, but in many ways they are my unique creation.

I hope that if you get a chance to read, that you enjoy.
