Explicit Content

For the first time I will be reviewing a novel that is classified as Erotica. I have read these novels without reviewing them before - and some of the urban fantasy novels I've read / reviewed have bordered on erotica. I was just a little thrown off by how I would go about this review, considering I also review young adult novels - and I just didn't want a younger person coming upon this and being exposed to some adult content. Soooo... for novels with intensely graphic sexual encounters I will be posting a explicit content label.
I was also thinking about starting a separate blog - this one dedicated to the adult content.  But I figured this might be overkill. I'm just trying to be morally responsible here - and not corrupt any youth.   Even though I was a corrupted youth myself - not that long ago either *cough cough*

I find myself in this same predicament sometimes. I like the young adult books, so many of my followers are young. I don't want to offend or lose them because of a book that I reviewed

I do not know how you do it but there is a disclaimer that comes on when someone hits your link and will not let you enter "adult" content blogs until you state you are sure you are legal age or some such. I have seen on a couple that I hit every once in a while.
If you do the nice disclaimer you came up with at the beginning of any "explicit" review you look fine to me....

I guess it depends on how many details your going to give. I think you could review it without using an erotic content unless the cover is very detailed. I do see your concern though since you review mainly YA novels. But still I think it depends on how many details your going to blog about.

I'm with Moonsanity. I think as long as you aren't graphic yourself, I think you'll be fine. However if it concerns you that a kid might pick up that book that has graphic content, then just state that it contains it.

I feel like giving people a quick heads up when posting about erotica or other stuff is more than enough- a lot of times the cover art and synopsis make it pretty clear that some books might not be ones you want your dad to find on the coffee table, so to speak. One great thing about book bloggers is that most people I've talked to are pretty good at figuring out what interests them and what doesn't, so you should be all set. This is an interesting issue though, and one I hadn't really given much thought to before.

I think this is a good compromise. I don't think an adult blog is necessary unless you really want one. I have been in this situation before and just mentioned that the book is rather graphic, but don't go into details myself. Looking forward to your review! :)

I read my first Erotica book a little ago and I reviewed it. I let everybody know that it wasn't young adult and I didn't go into detail so I don't think it bothered anyone.

I love a little erotica..... You can review without it becoming a erotica review making us hot and bothered ;-)

I think using your disclaimer as a warning instead of the one you have to click on is better.

You are still being responsible for sure.

Wow, you're so morally responsible. I'm impressed. Don't know why because you have shown yourself to be nothing but responsible in every way.

Don't worry about me...1) because I'm 18 and
2) My mom and aunt check out all erotica stuff before I read it.

It's funny because my aunt recommended the Anita Blake series. And my mom and I loved it until the Micah book. Got a little too pornish for us after that (but no problem with anyone who loves it).

Anyway, thanks for being so responsible.

Rachy!
You're so awesome! Way to look out and care for your followers and readers, totally cool :) I don't think you need to make another blog, well, unless you're going to be reading ALOT of erotica and want to review it and can justify making a whole 'nother blog for it.
But over all I echo everyone else's advice, You are reviewing the novel, not actually rehashing every steamy detail. I do have to admit though, I love the advisory disclaimer,LOL it makes me smile and it gets the point across. I guess you could use it if your review were to be explicit.

Nice idea, but yes on the overkill bit.

Do you mind if I steal that idea, not the button, will find one of my own. But if I review some erotica again I will post it

Welcome to the dark side!

This is probably a good idea. Me, I've just been putting bolded notes on books I think might not be appropriate for my YA readers, but yours is much more creative! Lol

I'm sure that anyone that reads your blog has to know how to use a computer. The moment you start doing that you lose all your inocence but its more probable that you have lost it the first moment you turn on the TV, so I don't think that anybody could blame you.
