Weekend Wrap-Up - In My Mailbox

Happy Sunday everyone. I've been kind of out of it for the last couple of weeks. My professional job has kind of taken over my life with a lot of extra projects, leaving me with very little free time, so I haven't been able to get out and visit a lot. Sorry about that. On top of that my MacPro is on the outs, so I had to go out and drop a fortune on a new iMac 27" - but boy is it pretty. And I mean that puter has lasted me for 5 years, so I definitely got my monies worth.  Less time on the computer has meant more time to read though, so expect a few reviews this week coming.

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and they are gearing up for a great week. I have high hopes for this week coming.

These are the books that have been delivered to me this week. I do this to promote the books in case I can't review them in a timely fashion...

White Cat (Curse Workers, Book 1)White Cat (Curse Workers, Book 1) by Holly Black
BWB YA Selection for July.

Cassel comes from a family of curse workers -- people who have the power to change your emotions, your memories, your luck, by the slightest touch of their hands. And since curse work is illegal, they're all mobsters, or con artists. Except for Cassel. He hasn't got the magic touch, so he's an outsider, the straight kid in a crooked family. You just have to ignore one small detail -- he killed his best friend, Lila, three years ago.

Ever since, Cassel has carefully built up a façade of normalcy, blending into the crowd. But his façade starts crumbling when he starts sleepwalking, propelled into the night by terrifying dreams about a white cat that wants to tell him something. He's noticing other disturbing things, too, including the strange behavior of his two brothers. They are keeping secrets from him, caught up in a mysterious plot. As Cassel begins to suspect he's part of a huge con game, he also wonders what really happened to Lila. Could she still be alive? To find that out, Cassel will have to out-con the conmen.

Deceived by DesireDeceived by Desire by Larissa Lyons
Adult's only.

A whore without any whoring credentials? Laney's convinced she can pretend well enough, after all, she's pretended to be a mistress for years. Cursed into the form of a lion without nightly sex, Nash Hammond wants only two things-his wenches wild and willing, and his liquor stron- and smooth. What he doesn't need is a virgin! Only problem is, Nash develops an affinity for the deceitful Laney-the "whore" who gives a man reason to hope.

Reader Advisory:Includes multi-gender spanking and lots of growling.

Amberville: A Novel (P.S.)Amberville by Tim Davys

What does it mean to be bad?

Eric Bear has it all: a successful career, a beautiful wife, a blissful home. He knows he's been lucky; a while back, his life revolved around drugs, gambling, a gang of stuffed-animal thugs, and notorious crime boss Nicholas Dove.

But the past isn't as far away as Eric had hoped. Rumors are swirling that Dove is on the Death List and that he wants Eric to save him. If Eric fails to act, his beloved wife, Emma Rabbit, will be torn apart, limb from limb, and reduced to stuffing.

With a nod to the best of noir and the wisest of allegories—interlaced with greed and gangsters—Amberville depicts an alternate world that mirrors our own realities and moral concerns, and reminds us of the inextricable link between good and evil.

Lanceheim: A NovelLanceheim by Time Davys

While finishing what was to be his greatest symphony, famed composer Reuben Walrus discovers he is going deaf. Desperate to stave off the encroaching silence, he embarks on an odyssey to find a fabled creature named Maximilian, rumored to have healing powers but only traceable via an underground network. But as Reuben gets closer to the truth, he must ask himself: Just who—or what—is Maximilian?

The story of the legendary creature is recorded by Wolf Diaz, Maximilian's oldest friend and most loyal follower. Oddly, unlike the other stuffed animals of Mollisan Town, Maximilian did not arrive by green delivery truck. He cannot be identified as any particular species and is made from a material unlike any other with almost invisible seams. And most puzzling, he grows in size. As Maximilian matures, he begins to preach odd parables, attracting a legion of followers hoping to learn from his teachings. But his believers aren't the only stuffed animals paying attention as his growing influence threatens the power of the darker forces currently ruling Mollisan Town. Now Maximilian is in hiding . . . and time is running out for Reuben to find him. As his search widens, the composer encounters a detective mouse, a giraffe who swears Maximilian miraculously cured his stomach cancer, and a mink who may hold the key to Reuben's salvation. But it's a race against time as Reuben's world steadily goes silent, and his desperation may ultimately lead to his undoing.

Waking the Witch (Women of the Otherworld, Book 11)Waking the Witch (Women of the Otherworld, Book 11) by Kelley Armstrong

The orphaned daughter of a sorcerer and a half-demon, Savannah is a terrifyingly powerful young witch who has never been able to resist the chance to throw her magical weight around. But at 21 she knows she needs to grow up and prove to her guardians, Paige and Lucas, that she can be a responsible member of their supernatural detective agency. So she jumps at the chance to fly solo, investigating the mysterious deaths of three young women in a nearby factory town as a favor to one of the agency's associates. At first glance, the murders look garden-variety human, but on closer inspection signs point to otherworldly stakes.

Soon Savannah is in over her head. She's run off the road and nearly killed, haunted by a mystery stalker, and freaked out when the brother of one of the dead women is murdered when he tries to investigate the crime. To complicate things, something weird is happening to her powers. Pitted against shamans, demons, a voodoo-inflected cult and garden-variety goons, Savannah has to fight to ensure her first case isn't her last. And she also has to ask for help, perhaps the hardest lesson she's ever had to learn.

Eternal SeductionEternal Seduction by Jennifer Turner

After living on the streets of New York City for over a decade, Logan Ellis admits her perceptions might be a little skewed. But twisted or not, there's a satisfying irony in watching a well dressed vampire stand in the middle of a ghetto alley, windblown trash scraping small circles near his feet. What she finds even more intriguing, is waiting for him to decide whether or not he's going to kill her. Kerestyan Nelek hasn't quite made up his mind. As the Lord of New York, he can't allow a homeless drug addict, whose memories are packed with knowledge of vampiric existence, to run free in his city. It's not the first time he's been in this situation with a human, it's just the first time in thousands of years he's come face to face with one who doesn't seem to care. And that's what makes the decision so damn difficult. What horrors would you have to witness before you went numb? How many years would it take for you to feel that way? What would it take to make you care again? Logan's answers are simple: the worst humanity has to offer, almost thirty...and something she never expected.

Nice mailbox! I've seen good things about White Cat. I won Deceived by Desire and it's one of the books I plan to take with me on vacation...

I'm a bit hesitant about Waking the Witch as I didn't like the witch books as much as I loved the Clay/Elena stories in that series.
