Happy Ides of March! Et tu, Brute?
Parajunkee's View is pleased as a poltergeist with a room full of psychics, to welcome author Lee Nichols to the blog in celebration of Paranormal Spring Break. Ms. Nichols is the author of the popular Haunting Emma series and in celebration of book two's release she has offered up a Signed copy of BETRAYAL (see below for deets)
Genre: Young Adult, Paranormal
Series: Haunting Emma Book 2
Fantasy Element: Ghosts
Order Online: Amazon.com

Parajunkee's View: What exactly is a ghostkeeper?
Lee Nichols: A ghostkeeper is someone who can see and control ghosts. Most ghostkeepers only have one ability, to summon, compel, communicate, dispel, or read objects that belonged to the dead. Emma Vaile has all five of these abilities.
PJV: Can you explain the issues revolving around soul mates and ghostkeepers?
LN: Ghostkeepers can't be in relationships with each other or they lose their ghostkeeping abilities. Emma and fellow ghostkeeper, Bennett, are in love, but they can't be together until they dispel Neos, an evil wraith-master.
PJV: Your main character in Deception and Betrayal is Emma, what makes her different than the usual female Young Adult heroine?

PJV: Your main character in Deception and Betrayal is Emma, what makes her different than the usual female Young Adult heroine?
LN: Well, she can control ghosts, that makes her a little different. But I think what makes her special is her sense of humor, her loyalty to her friends, that she thinks there's more to life than being in love, and even though it doesn't always come naturally, she's pretty courageous and kick-butt when she needs to be.
PJV: Who are some of your favorite characters in Young Adult literature, besides your own of course?
LN: Hmm. That's a tough one. There are so many great books and characters out there. I think the success of the Hunger Games series wasn't only based on the fantastic world building, but the wonderful characterization. It doesn't get much better than Katniss, Peeta, Gale, and Haymitch.
PJV: You write both Young Adult and Adult fiction, how does it differ from one voice to the other?
LN: The biggest difference for me is trying not to use words or expressions that a teenager wouldn't use. Otherwise it's the same process: building characters and worlds and turning them into a fun story.
PJV: If you could possess a supernatural power what would it be?
LN: I have thought about Emma. I love Mae Whitman, even though physically she isn't a perfect match, I think she has the right blend of toughness and vulnerability. It would be fun to have the series turned into a movie or TV show, but mostly I'm just happy they're books.
PJV: How did you decide to write about ghosts and the people that can contact them?
LN: I wanted to write a contemporary Gothic novel with a haunted house and this is just what came out.
LN: No particular spooky story. But I definitely think houses and objects can by haunted by the spirits of the dead.
LN: I'm writing this at the end of the January in my house in Maine and feeling desperate for some place warm. I think my best Spring Breaks were always spent hanging out with my friends on the beach in Santa Barbara where I grew up. Sounds pretty great at the moment.

LN: I get asked this a lot and I really think I'd like to be some kind of were animal. I think my favorite were creature is Carrie Jone's tiger in the Need series. How cool would it be to turn into a tiger?
PJV: How cool indeed. I always liked White tigers, we have a few of them at our local zoo. Have you ever thought of who you would cast as some of your main characters?
