Our Feature - Steph Likes Books
Because of a failure to post by the other feature...our only feature today is Steph Likes Books...
Q. How has your reading habits changed since you were a teen? or If you are still a teen what new genres are you in love with currently?
The funny funny thing is, I didn't read young adult as a teen. I was reading young adult novels when I was in the age bracket of 7 to 10. By the sixth grade I was reading Stephen King and Dean Koontz. When I was done with the horror genre I went feet first into Fantasy - tearing through series like the Dragon Lance series (I mean Tanis Half-Elven was epic, probably my first fiction crush). When I went through series after series...fantasy was always very close to the science fiction section, so I began picking up the greats like Heinlein, Asimov, Clarke...and then the fabulous Adams, Keyes, Card, McCaffrey...
Those stayed with be for a long time. My high school years were spent with dragons or in outer space...and continued. The book I brought on the plane as I shipped out for basic training was Starship Troopers and Friday by Robert Heinlein. It wasn't until my twenties...I think I was maybe 21 or so, when my co-worker said, "Rachel, you read all that fantasy crap...what do you think about this Harry Potter kid?" My response was, "Harry Potter who?"
Her son wanted to read the books, I think 2 or three were out by then. It was the only young adult I had read in a long time but I enjoyed the hell out of them. But, I only read HP no other YA. I quickly returned to my new love of Urban Fantasy, Anita Blake, Rachel Morgan...until about four years ago...when a girlfriend of mine said, "Rachel what do you think of this Twilight craziness?" Currently my stack of 80 books sitting behind me in the TBR pile is probably 80% young adult - but still all paranormal, science fiction or fantasy...a girl has to have some standards.
