Just your average boy-meets-girl, girl-kills-people story…

Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead.

So did his father before him, until his gruesome murder by a ghost he sought to
kill. Now, armed with his father’s mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the
country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. Together they
follow legends and local lore, trying to keep up with the murderous dead—keeping
pesky things like the future and friends at bay.

When they arrive in a new town in search of a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed
in Blood, Cas doesn’t expect anything outside of the ordinary: move, hunt, kill.
What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he’s
never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal
murder in 1958: once white, but now stained red and dripping blood. Since her
death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the
deserted Victorian she used to call home.

And she, for whatever reason, spares his life.

Blog Tour & Giveaway: Mated by Ria Candro

Please welcome Ria Candro to Parajunkee After Hours.

Dynamics of the Perfect Sex Scene

What is it that makes a great sex scene? Is it the choice of words used? The types of descriptions given? Well, these are all important ingredients to writing a sex scene, but these factors alone will not a great sex scene make. There’s still one key ingredient to a hot, unforgettable sex scene: Emotion.

Whether we read science fiction, thrillers, romance, or erotica (or any combination of thereof), we all read for one reason. To experience emotion. We want to feel what the characters are going through, to walk a mile in their shoes. And for us romance junkies, we want to fall in love with a character. This is why it’s so important to show the emotion behind the action.

Whether your story involves two, three, or (in my case) four characters, the focus should be on the inner experience involved with the act of sex. What are the characters feeling? What emotional bonds are being formed between them? Pushing boundaries is okay, as long as it’s perfectly clear that all characters are on board. In my current release, Mated, my heroine meets a trio of sexy aliens who believe she is the perfect mate...for all three of them. They’re more than accustomed to sharing, and they will do whatever it takes to convince her she is the one for them. Mated is now available from Ellora’s Cave, for more information click here.

I’d love to hear about your favorite sex scenes in novels. What is it that made the scene(s) so memorable?

Ria Candro is the author of futuristic and paranormal erotic romance. When not dreaming up hot love stories, she enjoys spending time with her family in their home state of Florida. You can learn more about Ria and her novels at her blog: www.riacandro.wordpress.com.

Tour hosted by Goddess Fish Promotions

Blurb:
When Natalie awakens on a spaceship manned by three gorgeous and adoring hunks, she’s convinced she’s dreaming. It’s up to Andros, Leikos and Zafron to prove to her she’s not. And that she’s the perfect mate for all three of them.

Spygian alpha males travel far and wide in search of their perfect partner. And then share their mate in the most delicious, pleasurable ways they can imagine. But for Natalie, loving these red-hot aliens means leaving Earth. Is she willing to take a chance on a love that’s out of this world?

Excerpt:
The front panel of the ship’s control room slid open, exposing a view of space through the clear, impenetrable shield.

"We are approaching Earth now," said Leikos, Andros’ second-in-command.
Silence filled the control room as Andros and his men stared at the round globe. Bright blue oceans eclipsed the images of land with a certain beauty that made him think of home.

"It looks somewhat like Spygia," said Zafron, the third and final member of Andros’ pod.

Andros grunted in assent. The planet did resemble their own, although their oceans were more of an orange hue. But still, it wasn’t the planet itself that had drawn them to this part of the galaxy, so far from their very own. No, they had been drawn to what was on this planet. Or rather, to who.

Our mate resides somewhere on Earth.

His Spygian homing instinct had led him here, to this alien planet, so that he could discover the one woman who was meant to be theirs. Now he had but to find her and get her back to this ship. Not an easy task. But compared to what they had gone through to get here, compared to the many weeks of travel, it was no great hardship.
Now that they had found the planet, they must search for their woman.

And pray she would consent.

Darkness Dawns Blog Tour & Giveaway

It’s wonderful to be here at Parajunkee’s View! I’m Dianne Duvall and I’m here today to celebrate the release of Darkness Dawns, the first book in my new Immortal Guardians paranormal romance series. I’m also thrilled to announce that I will be returning in March -- March 18th to be exact -- to participate in the big Paranormal Spring Break! For now, I’d like to tell you a little bit about my series.

Darkness Dawns takes a new approach to the vampire romance genre. In it, vampires are not the heroes. They are the villains . . . and somewhat tragic ones at that, though it’s difficult to feel sorry for them considering their vile actions. They also aren’t undead. Rather they are infected with a rare symbiotic virus that first conquers, then replaces their immune system and lends them incredible strength, speed and regenerative abilities, coupled with an unfortunate photosensitivity and a need for frequent infusions of blood. Unfortunately, the virus also damages the brains of humans infected with it, causing them to rapidly descend into madness. So even good guys who are infected with it will become villains who prey upon humans.

Immortals are infected with the same virus. But they were something more than human before their transformation. Though they don’t know the source of it, each was born with incredibly advanced DNA that bestows upon them special paranormal abilities and mutates the virus so they aren’t afflicted with the madness it causes in vampires. Stronger and more powerful, the Immortal Guardians spend their nights hunting the vampires and preventing them from killing innocent humans.

It is into this world that Music Theory Professor Sarah Bingham unexpectedly finds herself thrust as a new enemy rises amongst the vampires’ ranks and leads them into war against the immortals.

Giveaway: One lucky commenter will receive a signed copy of Darkness Dawns. See below for giveaway details and the chance for extra entries.

Darkness Dawns Synopsis

In this dazzling, sensual novel, Dianne Duvall beckons readers into a world of vampires, immortals, and humans with extraordinary gifts . . . where passion can last forever, if you're willing to pay the price . . .

Once, Sarah Bingham’s biggest challenge was making her students pay attention in class. Now, after rescuing a wounded stranger, she’s landed in the middle of a battle between corrupt vampires and powerful immortals who also  need blood to survive. Roland Warbrook is the most compelling man Sarah has ever laid hands on. But his desire for her is mingled with a hunger he can barely control . . .

In his nine centuries of immortal existence, no woman has tempted Roland as much as Sarah. But asking her to love him is impossible -- when it means forfeiting the world she’s always known, and the life he would do anything to protect.

Darkness Dawns Excerpt

How it all begins . . .

A strident screech pierced the predawn quiet.

The hair on the back of her neck rising, Sarah Bingham surveyed the meadow around her. The sky had gone from black to charcoal gray, a harbinger of sunrise that did little to alleviate the gloom. In the nine months North Carolina had been her home, she had heard some creepy animal calls, but that one had sounded downright human.
Couldn't have been. She lived way out in the boonies with no nearby neighbors.
Struggling to shake off her unease, she impaled the soil with a shovel, turned it over, then repeated the process that would ultimately culminate in a vegetable garden. The unseasonable heat she had hoped to avoid by starting early added a glimmer of moisture to her skin as she grappled with the drought-hardened ground.
Oh yeah. A few hours of this and she would definitely collapse into an exhausted slumber. Screw you insomnia! The spring semester was over. Her students were gone. She was going to sleep tonight if it killed her.

Loud snarling, growling sounds abruptly split the air, accompanied by cracks and thumps and the snap of branches.

Starting violently, Sarah gripped the wooden handle of the shovel and stared at the heavy undergrowth in front of her with wide, unblinking eyes.

The foliage began to thrash and sway. Her heart slammed against her ribs.

Oh crap! Weren't there bears in North Carolina?

Branches and leaves exploded outward as a massive dark form, moving so fast she couldn't see it clearly, charged toward her.

Too panicked to even scream, she dropped the wooden handle and raised her arms to protect her face, head and neck.

A heavy weight crashed into her left side. Feet flying up, she hit the ground hard on her back two or three yards away. Dry soil and twigs abraded her hands as she threw them out to the sides. Something tore through her right shirtsleeve and cut her elbow. A painful throbbing invaded her ribs.

Rolling onto her stomach, Sarah jerked her head up and looked around wildly in time to see the trees that bisected this end of the meadow envelop . . . whatever had barreled into her.

Quiet settled upon the clearing.

Wincing, she pressed a hand to her aching side and scrambled to her feet.

The growls and thrashing resumed, even louder than before.

Adrenaline surging through her veins, shortening her breath, speeding her pulse, she grabbed the shovel with shaking hands, turned it upside down and held it like a baseball bat.

She didn't know what that thing was, but if it came back, she was going to knock it six ways from Sunday.

“Where'd they go?” a voice called out breathlessly.

Sarah jumped and glanced at the trees that bordered the meadow on her right.

“That way! Straight ahead! Don't lose 'em!”

Two figures, mere shadows amidst the dense, dark brush, moved as quickly as they could in the same direction as the . . . thing. Only visible for a brief moment before the trees swallowed them again, they didn't appear to have noticed her. The long-sleeved green shirt she wore over a black tank top and sweat pants must make her blend into the dim scenery.

The growling ceased. So did the thumps and thrashing.

Sarah took a cautious step backward. Then another.

“Ah man!” the first voice blurted. “I think I'm gonna puke!”

“Don't be such a wuss.”

What the hell was going on? Had those guys been chasing a bear?

It had to have been a bear, right?

“Aren't you gonna kill him?” the second voice asked.

“Let the sun finish him,” a new voice, deep and full of malice, sneered.

“What do you want us to do?” the second countered.

“Stay until it's over,” the third instructed, his words softened by a British accent, “then bring me whatever is left of him.”

Sarah continued to inch toward the wall of greenery that separated the meadow from her backyard, trying not to make any sound that might alert them to her presence.
Who were you supposed to call when you thought someone was torturing wild animals? 911? Animal control?

“Is he gone?” the first voice asked uneasily.

“Yeah,” the second responded.

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah-yeah. He's gone. He's gone.”

“Dude! That was the most awesome thing I've ever seen in my life!”

“Didn't I tell ya?”

Wasn't torturing animals the first step toward becoming a serial killer?

“Hey, what are you doin'?” the first asked.

“Cuttin' his clothes off.”

Sarah froze, ice filling her veins. His clothes?

“Dude, that's so gay.”

“I'm not gay, asswipe. I wanna see what the sun's gonna do to him.”

“Oh. Cool.”

“Get his boots.”

A man? That couldn't have been a man that had knocked her down. It had been huge, had growled and had crossed the clearing way too fast to have been human.

Yet, it sounded as if their victim was a man, not an animal.

And, apparently, they weren't through with him.

Spinning around, she took three quick steps, intending to hurry home and call 911.

“Hey, Bobby,” the second said, “you ever stabbed anyone before?”

She halted.

“No.”

“Check this out.”

Thud.

Grunt.

“Dude!”

Crap! Reversing directions, she crossed the clearing as quickly and quietly as she could. Her stinging hands tightened around the shovel handle. Sweat beaded on her skin. The bitter taste of fear invading her mouth, she entered the trees and crept forward.

This is crazy. This is crazy.

She was a music professor, not a police officer!
But it would take too long for the police to arrive. She lived so far from town . . .

“You wanna try it?”

“Won't they be pissed if we cut him up?”

“Not as long as he's still breathin' when the sun hits him. And if he's not, who cares? How're they gonna know?”

The trees weren't as thick here as she had thought. After just a few steps, Sarah stood at the edge (with any luck, still concealed by their branches) and peered anxiously into the next field.

A whiff of rank body odor struck her.

There were three men. One, whose face was hidden from view, lay on the ground on his back, what she could see of him bare. His arms had been pulled away from his sides and appeared to be held down by something she couldn't glimpse through the tall grasses. Closer to her, his ankles had been lashed together with . . . rope? The weeds obscured them too much to tell. But they, too, were held down, judging by the way his thigh muscles continually flexed and strained.

A blond in faded jeans and a yellow T-shirt straddled the man's thighs, his back to Sarah. A second with brown hair stood beside him, mostly turned away, gaping down at the naked man.

Though she only caught a quick impression of their faces, Sarah guessed the assailants were around twenty years old.

The blond suddenly raised both hands above his head, his fingers curled around the grip of a pocketknife, then slammed them down.

Thud.

The naked man jerked and grunted with pain.

The brunette yelled, “Dude! Awesome!”

Sickened, terrified, trembling uncontrollably, Sarah stepped out of the trees, skulked forward and swung the shovel.

The blond looked up at his accomplice. “You wanna--”

Thunk.

Yellow Shirt slumped sideways, hit the ground and lay still.

The second man gaped at his friend in stupefaction, then spun toward Sarah . . . just as she swung again.

Thunk.

Right between the eyes.

“Ow!”

Uh oh.

Staggering back a step, he swore profusely, blinked hard several times, then frowned.
Thunk.

That did it. His pale eyes rolled back in his head as he sank bonelessly to the ground.

When Sarah turned her attention to the naked man, her stomach lurched and she thought for a moment she might be sick.

He had indeed been restrained. Thick, rough rope stained with blood bound his ankles and had rubbed his skin raw. A T-shaped metal spike as thick as her thumb had been driven into the ground between them, immobilizing him and cutting deep grooves into his flesh. Identical spikes had been driven through the palm of each hand, pinning his arms to the ground.

It was as if they had wanted to crucify him but, lacking the necessary lumber, had staked him to the ground instead.

“Oh sh**.” The whisper escaped her involuntarily.

If the stakes weren't enough, two stab wounds marred his abdomen, courtesy of the blond. Deep gashes, weeping copious amounts of blood, scored the man's muscled arms, chest and legs.

As she fought back nausea, Sarah directed her gaze to his face.

He was perhaps in his mid-thirties and handsome, despite the clenched jaw and lines of pain that bracketed his mouth and eyes. Short, jet black hair. Matching brows. Straight nose. Piercing, dark brown eyes that caught and held hers as she unlocked her stiff limbs and forced herself to move forward.

Blog Tour: Pack of Lies by Vanessa Vaughn

Today's feature is Pack of Lies by Vanessa Vaughn.

Pack of LiesA very hot eBook featuring some intense werewolves with an interesting take on the whole wolf pack dynamic.

I also have to say that this is one of the best eBook trailers that I have seen in a long while:

Synopsis:
When Jack is attacked by a powerful werewolf one moonlit night, his world is forever changed.

Marcus is that wolf, the strong leader of his pack, who never imagined a mere mortal could ever escape him, much less ever become one of his kind. And yet, as time passes, he can't deny the handsome human is slowly beginning to change.

No longer the civilized architect he used to be, Jack feels a new power coalescing inside of him. He barely even recognizes himself as he becomes more sexual, more impulsive, more wild in every way.

But as the bite transforms him, it also binds he and his attacker together forever. The two share a powerful unbreakable link, no matter how forcefully they may each try to deny it. Marcus is already hiding secrets from the other wolves, and his position as Alpha is threatened. Could Jack be the new ally Marcus needs to set things right, or will their desire for one another draw them away from all they know and alter the course of their lives forever?

Excerpt:

The moon.

That soft sensual glow is always with me. Even when I can’t see the night sky, I feel its dark caress.

As the moon’s phases change, it breathes a coy suggestive whisper in my ear. It presses close, and I feel its fingers brush my skin. That light sparks something inside of me. Something primal. It starts a fever somewhere deep and spreads like slow-burning fire through my limbs.

I can always sense the Change starting. The full moon’s strong hand curls around my throat. I feel its grip tighten like a man’s thick fingers on my neck. When that grip makes me suddenly lightheaded, my pulse quickens, and I sink quietly to my knees. I know I have to give myself over, and I know how impossible it is to resist.

Some humans dream about submission. They crave it, complete with soft tortures and the smooth caress of expensive leather. They want to be bound and made to feel wonderfully, blissfully helpless. They enjoy feeling compelled to give in.

Humans like to play with their toys.

But what do they know about pleasure and pain so naturally intertwined?

When the animal in me takes over, I feel sensations more intense than any whip could offer. My teeth descend to sharp lethal points against my tongue, and I feel the lovely, horrifying ache as bones lengthen and skin is stretched.

But that ache only makes me smile.

In that instant of agony, my instincts wash over me like a hard drug flooding my veins.

Desire takes over—the desire for sex and for the hunt—obscuring all logical thought, all worries, absolutely all guilt. I feel ecstasy as I flex my teeth and claws. I feel a need building urgently and unstoppably between my legs with an intensity that few experience.

So, you see, as the gut-wrenching agony of the Change grips me, so does the all-consuming pleasure.

Perhaps that is why we wolves prefer our hunts so vicious.

And our sex so rough.

Book Synopsis:
Imagining vampires at the heart of the social struggles of 1920s, Moonshine blends a tempestuous romance with dramatic historical fiction, populated by a lively mythology inhabiting the gritty New York City streets Zephyr Hollis is an underfed, overzealous social activist who teaches night school to the underprivileged of the Lower East Side. Strapped for cash, Zephyr agrees to help a student, the mysterious Amir, who proposes she use her charity worker cover to bring down a notorious vampire mob boss. What he doesn’t tell her is why. Soon enough she’s tutoring a child criminal with an angelic voice, dodging vampires high on a new blood-based street drug, and trying to determine the real reason behind Amir’s request—not to mention attempting to resist his dark, inhuman charm.

Moonshine: A Novel
Moonshine: A Novel by Alaya Johnson
Review copy provided by BooksAnd Virtual Book Tour Coordinator
. Released May 11, 2010

I glanced at the band and finished my triumphant high note just as they cut out.  Smiling, (seductively and serenely, not like a giddy five-year-old), I turned back to the audience.
And there he was, lounging in the front row in a fashionably ostentatious tuxedo with knee-length tails, a patterned red handkerchief and patent-leather shoes, smiling up at me as thought I hadn't last seen him with a blood-mad child vampire slung over his shoulder.  And though I'd been looking for him all day, I realized that the sight of him lounging so casually made my latent stage fright roar like a cronered lion. He nodded at me.
Oh, blood stakes.
The next few numbers had a bit more bite.

PJVs QUICKIE POV: Sucked in from the onset, I fell instantly in awe of the singing vampire suffragette, Zephyr Hollis and her world of out of the coffin, vamps that have inalienable rights just like any other person.  I find my fascination didn't end with the character of Ms. Hollis though, it also extended to her dashing counterpart Amir and her charming friends, Lily, Iris and Aileen. Johnson definitely has a knack for character creation.  Paired with the strong 3 dimensional characters was also a very staccato and fun tone that was reminiscent of the Gail Carriger's Parasol Protectorate series. Moonshine is a keeper, and I hope to revisit the world Johnson created over and over again.

REVIEW: Zephyr Hollis has had quite an interesting couple of days. First she finds a dead child in an alley and hides him away before the authorities can stake him and cut off his head. Then she finds herself in the employ of one very mysterious and gloriously sexy Amir.  It is not just a casual endeavor either, she has to track down the notorious Rinaldo, vampire and mob boss, so Amir can do, God knows what to him.  With a crazy new drug on the street, marketed to vamps only, and human and vamp relations hanging by a tenuous thread, Zephyr must track down Rinaldo and still try to keep her head at the same time.

Charming and engrossing, Moonshine is a must read. Unlike most historicals, Moonshine puts you within the moment, engages in witty and dated dialogue without you even realizing and gives you a small history lesson at the same time, without of course, being too obtrusive. I think I learned 10 new ways to say drunk. Fun. I'd like to call this the historical that isn't all stuffy and swarthy like most historicals.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Adult novel, for mature readers.  Fans of Carriger's The Parasol Protectorate will enjoy.

Book Blogging 101 - What is a Blog Tour?

Spawned from the Big Sis, Little Blog program, Book Blogging 101 was born. Do you have a question? Leave it in the comments section or email me parajunkee at gmail dot com

Q. What is a Blog Tour?

A Blog Tour is a virtual tour that an author or book takes throughout the bloggyverse. Basically a group of bloggers participate on a given day and feature a book or an author.  They usually occur around the time of a book release, or a rerelease.

Hosting a Tour:
If you decide to host a tour, most likely you will be provided with a date that they author would like to stop by.  You are working with the author's timeline, because the best blog tours have author participation.  But not all do. Sometimes publishers will just provide you with a book, and ask you to do the review on a certain day.  They might also offer books for giveaway.

The Purpose Of A Blog Tour

A blog tour is used for virile marketing. When the bloggyverse starts discussing a certain book, it takes off and sooner or later everyone is talking and commenting about that particular book. Authors like doing tours, because it is relatively inexpensive and it gets their title out there.

What you need to know to host a successful blog tour.

  • Keep an open line of communication with the PR person, or the author that is coordinating.
  • Promote the tour in advance
  • Use google calendar or other Coming Soon gadgets to show that the tour is coming soon
  • Don't be afraid to ask for a giveaway copy
  • Don't be afraid to ask if the author will participate in the tour by replying to comments that day

Gentlemen Prefer Succubi (Succubus Diaries) - Blog Tour

Gentlemen Prefer Succubi (Succubus Diaries) Gentlemen Prefer Succubi (Succubus Diaries) by Jill Myles
Blog Tour Copy Provided by Pocket Books

Author's Website

PJV's Quickie POV: I have to admit, I'm not as addicted to Paranormal Romance as I am to the grittier Urban Fantasy.  I use PNR and regular Romance as quickie "feel good" reads, because this is what they usually are.  Not much depth, a little bit of hanky panky and some happily-ever-after to make you go "Aww" at the end. While Gentlemen Prefer Succubi (Succubus Diaries) comes from the same mold as your usual PNR novels, there are a lot of exciting original ideas, and new takes on old subjects. The writing style did remind me of authors such as Katie MacAlister (Crouching Vampire, Hidden Fang: A Dark Ones Novel) but while witty, it wasn't silly and there was an underlying darker side to the novel. Ms. Myles painted a unique picture on the world of paranormal, her writing style was edgy, witty and entertaining.  The novel was very sexy and had me glued to the pages, wondering what was going to happen next.

Review: Jackie Brighton has just experienced the worst night of her life.  After having sex with a complete stranger, the same stranger, whom all she can remember about him are his eyes and certain other parts of his anatomy, dumped her in a dumpster and left her for dead. Jackie's life has never been the same since, which is unfortunate, because she liked her boring dumpy life...even if it was lacking in the excitement category.

Jackie is now a succubus, forced by an all-consuming need to have sex every other day.  Now the slightest thing turns her into a quivering sex-crazed lunatic, and her new best friend is a well-known porn star. Oh, and now she seems to be attracting everything male in the vicinity, including but not limited to, angels, fallen angels, vampires and the occasional doorman. Jackie has never been a girl to be desired and now she can't walk five steps without someone ogling her or trying to get in her pants. It's been quite a life change for Jackie.

I have to give to Myles, the book was very entertaining.  The tone was impressive in how it had a comedic feel but also managed to work through dark parts of the novel. The character of Jackie, Noah, Remy and Zane were all well developed and likable characters. Myles' plot-lines followed through and her background story was very well laid out and while not completely original it did have fresh takes on old ideas.

Where my disappointment did lie was in the triviality of the story when it came to Jackie's transformation into the supernatural world.  Like most PNR and UF novels, Jackie is your human main character who finds herself changing into a paranormal creature.  This is where I thought the novel was a bit well "Cinderellaesque". Jackie a size 14, dumpy, nerdy chick, gets bitten and sexed into becoming a Succubus.  Now, her hair brightens, her waist thins, her features get enhanced and B cup Jackie is now DD Jackie pa-dow.  Every chubby chicks wet dream right? Pair that off with hotter than Brad Pitt fallen angels with appendages the size of baby arms, fighting over your affections with smokin' hot, bad boy vampires with stamina for days...well I guess it was just too fantasy-like. And then of course the whole time she resisted.  From what I could discern Jackie had only had one sexual partner before her succubus transformation, yet, and I don't want to give away spoilers, but the ending while I thought was appropriate, definitely showed she came a long way since her transformation.

Other than that - the novel was a great read and I will be reading the second installment Succubi Like It Hot (The Succubus Diaries). While a sore spot for me, Jackie's descent into the supernatural world is something that any chick would love to participate in.

Reccomendations: PNR fans will not be disappointed, but I don't think this is a good introduction to the sub-genre, it might be a little much for some. This is not for younger readers, strong language and sexual encounters make up a good majority of the novel, parents, I wouldn't recommend passing this on to your kids.  This is also not your A+B romance novel, so if you like your PNR very steamy and with added bonus of A+B & A+C well... you'll enjoy this book.

Veracity by Laura Bynum Blog Tour

Veracity

Veracity by Laura Bynum

Review Copy provided by Pocket Books.

Author's Website

PJV's Quickie POV:  It has been awhile since I have partaken in adult science fiction and boy has it been too long. There is nothing like a bit of thought provoking, dystopian to get the brain working and the political addiction kicking. Wow - Veracity was everything a good political sci-fi thriller should be, well thought out, beautifully written, great characters, evil politicians...while I would never want to escape to the world of Veracity, reading of what could be made me think about how close we might be.

Review: The world of Harper Adams is set in the near future, stemming from events that occur starting around 2008, with the meat of the story happening in the year 2045. Harper lives in a world where a terrible pandemic has struck the US and thrown the world into tumult. Because of the pandemic government has taken over, ruling over the population with an iron fist that controls everything, including the words that can be spoken.

Harper's world is a dark existence, filled with police that hand out rape and torture like present day law officers hand out paper citations.  Every day citizens are hauled off and executed because the dared speak words such as riot, rebellion, offline and forgiveness. People such as Harper that possess extrasensory abilities are given upper-level positions where they use their abilities to "sniff" out terrorist and other rebellious citizens who are opposed to the Confederation's government. But as Harper has always possessed her abilities to read auras and sense what people might be hiding within themselves, she knows that what the Confederation is feeding the people is mostly lies and misdirections.  She knows deep down inside that something is very wrong with her government, yet she just doesn't know exactly how wrong it might be.  That is until her best friend is executed and her godchild is used as a pawn to subdue the population.  Harper knows in her heart that she can't just let things go on as they have been, she has to try, no matter how daunting that task seems.

Ms. Bynum is an excellent story teller.  The world she created is so real it is terrifying.  As I dove deeper into this novel I could imagine this occurring and it almost seem inevitable.  The events of the novel were all expounded upon and reasoning was given to back up these events, which usually led to me hyperventilating thinking of myself in this position in the near future.  My goodness, Harper could be my own daughter one day! A terrible thought, but the path we are taking as a country sometimes seems like we are destined to a bleak future.  Yet, underneath the darkness, the novel told the story of courage and unwillingness of certain people to submit to oppression.  That in this world we live in mass lies may be believed by most, but there will always be those people that see through the BS to the truth.

It is always refreshing to read a good "make-me-think" novel, especially one that speaks to me from a direction that is close to my heart.  For the last couple of years I have really been disheartened by misrepresentation from media outlet, politicians and the like.  Some of these misrepresentations have gone so far as to be outright lies that the masses suck down like candy, believing these lies and regurgitating them over and over again as if they are gospel.  I've gotten into arguments with people citing information that they saw on the History Channel and Saturday Night Live as fact.  What are we becoming as a society? This book addresses what we could become and it is very scary.  My thanks go out to Ms. Bynum for making me think more, and hopefully for inciting a bit of thought in more people.

Now, to not show complete bias with this novel, I must go into a few of the problems.  One of the problems I found with the book is the sheer amount of information and background, sometimes it becomes a little bit too much.  Added to that fact, there is a lot of time line shifts, where you shift from past to present that tends to get confusing.  There are a few major occurrences that are covered within Harper's lifetime and there is no discernible pattern (until the end) of how these events are covered.  We shift from present day Harper to teenage Harper, to just a few months in the past, etc.  In the end it all comes together, but at times, especially the few months in the past, can be confusing. To give an example at the very end there is even a flashback that confused me (when Harper calls her daughter), I wasn't sure if were in the present or past, even though it was kind of obvious it was a flashback. Other than that, the novel was a wonderful read and I was sorry to see it end.

Recommendations: I'm recommending this to sci-fans and readers who like a bit of political intrigue.  Similar books, 1984, Fahrenheit 451, The Handmaiden's Tale. For the teens, there is cursing but nothing overly scandalous.  The content is rather mature, with mentions of rape, torture, prostitution and other adult material, that is more suitable for older teens and adults. Parents please read this book before passing it on to your teens, not to censor, but to to discuss the topics that are in this book with your child.  I believe topics discussed in this novel are very important, and the in-your-face look at the future world might be a wake-up call to some.

Better Part of Darkness Tour & Contest

Scroll down to the end for contest rules and info!

One of the most violent prone heroines that I have come across in awhile...Charlie Madigan. Single mother, cop, tough ass chick, Charlie Madigan turns Better Part of Darkness from just your average Urban Fantasy novel into an on the edge of your seat, turn-your-head-don't-look kind of novel.

Charlie's world is a world where the discovered two different planes of existences, or other worlds. Worlds that humans had coined Heaven and Hell in mythology and religious texts.  These worlds are not spiritual though, they are the worlds of just other races of beings and now they are a part of the human world.  With their introduction into human society they have also brought a slew of other potentially deadly problems. This is where Charlie comes in.  Her job is to police the other worlders, along with her siren partner Hank.

When a string of overdoses begin occurring throughout the city, the drug screams "other world".  To make matters worse, Charlie gets called to her daughter's school, a child, a friend of Charlie's daughter has overdosed on the drug - now it is a race against time to locate the makers of this drug and find a cure to the horrible side-effects of Ash.

Charlie gets herself in momentous amounts of trouble in this who-done-it, explore-your-new-preternatural-talents novel.  You go from one action packed sequence to the next - usually where Charlie is beating their heads in - or getting her own head beat in, depending on the strength of her opponent. Definitely not for the squeamish.

What I liked about this novel, the characters were strong, the background was rich in detail, and the writing was spot on.  Ms. Gay painted a gritty picture of her world that had me imagining every last detail.  At times I believed I myself was trailing behind Charlie in Atlanta's famous Underground. I also liked that she was a single-mother, you don't see that often in these books.

The only flaws of the novel that I found surrounded Charlie.  Sometimes she was just too much.  She was a bit too neurotic.  She was constantly analyzing herself, yet flying off the handle.  There was tons of self-discovery in this novel and I think it might have been handled a little more inobtrusive.  Secondly, with all the hot boys running around I so wanted Charlie to get a little love action, but *sigh* I feel a bit repressed now.

Yet, book was excellent.  Great read and I recommend it to urban fantasy fans galore.  If you like the Patricia Briggs, Mercy Thomas Series...you'll love this one.
